This programme is designed to apply to a wide range of businesses in the primary sector, including agriculture, horticulture, pest and conservation contractors, apiculture, forestry and fencing contractors. Classes are conducted using Zoom so you can easily join from your home, office or anywhere that has an Internet connection. Learning material is accessed through our online learning platform. This programme will teach you the latest business management techniques.

Working in partnership

Farmers, horticulturalists and other agribusiness decision makers now have a completely new way to gain business skills, following the formation of a partnership between Primary ITO and NorthTec. Increasing the agribusiness skills of the primary industry is the focus of an initiative involving DairyNZ, Primary ITO and NorthTec.  Formal qualifications such as this Diploma provide vital business skills and knowledge for those in the industry.

What will I learn?

The New Zealand Diploma in Primary Industry Business Management (Level 5) is the focus of an initiative involving DairyNZ, Primary ITO and NorthTec.  The organisations have joined forces to support agribusiness owners and managers to build their knowledge and skills - creating a productive, sustainable future for the industry.

  • Compile and integrate whole business information about an agribusiness to critically analyse performance and identify opportunities for improvement 
  • Manage the financial requirements of an agribusiness 
  • Manage staffing requirements in an agribusiness
  • Manage natural and/or physical resources for agribusiness sustainability

Entry Requirements

All applicants must:

  • be at least 16 years old at the time the programme commences.
  • be able to understand follow, and respond to instructions given in English.
  • be physically able to complete the programme specific outcomes

  • be physically able to complete the programme-specific outcomes.

Applicants for whom English is not a first language must have an IELTS score of 5 with no band score lower than 5; or an accepted international equivalence.

This programme is not open to international students.

Youth Guarantee Fund*

If you are aged 16 to 24, you could study for FREE as part of the government's Youth Guarantee fund. To qualify for the Youth Guarantee fund, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Complete an application for a course that is covered by the Youth Guarantee fund.
  • Be a NZ citizen or permanent resident.
  • Be 16 to 24 years old at the time the course starts. Learners who are 15 years old and hold Ministry approved early leaving exemption from their school may also be eligible. This exemption must be in place before the course starts.

Priority places will be given to students who:

  • have not yet achieved NCEA Level 1 or NCEA Level 2; or
  • have completed a Level 1 or Level 2 qualification through a Youth Guarantee provision programme.

Career opportunities and pathways

Graduates of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge to work or gain employment in a management or supervisory role in a range of primary industries. Graduates of this qualification may progress to relevant qualifications at Level 6 or above in business management.
