Project Management is a challenging yet rewarding field of expertise. The sense of fulfilment achieved when a project reaches successful completion is satisfying and energising. If you want to understand and deliver excellence from a project management perspective, then this qualification will give you strong foundations to help achieve that goal.

Who is this for?

Graduates of this qualification will have the knowledge and skill to feel comfortable taking on an entry level role in project management. This might be for a commercial entity, or it might be for a community group. You will gain the expertise to take the first steps in your Project Management career.

What you will learn

  • Project Management Principles - This qualification will provide you with a well-rounded understanding of the core principles and components of project management. From business justification through to defining deliverables and continuous project improvement, you will benefit from developing a sound awareness of all facets of project management.

  • Project Management methodologies - The range of Project Management methodologies is vast. There are many tools available and finding one that works well for your task is important. Understand PMBOK, PRINCE 2, Six sigma and Agile, among the many project management options. Compare these methodologies and select the most appropriate for your project.

  • Project Management tools - The range of modern software tools available to assist you take your project to a successful conclusion is significant. Knowing which tool to use during a project life cycle phase is important and you also need to know how to use these tools effectively.   This qualification will help you gain a sound awareness of the tools available and how to apply them within your business environment.

  • Hands-on knowledge - Take advantage of the opportunity to work through a real-life project and understand the selection of tools, software and methodologies to get a great outcome. Apply your new-found project management skills to take a project through all stages of a project life cycle.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A minimum of 14 numeracy credits at level 1 or higher in Mathematics or Pangarau on the Directory of Assessment Standards; and

  • Fifty credits at level 2 or above with at least 12 credits in each of three subjects including a minimum of 8 literacy credits at level 2 or higher in English or Te Reo Māori; of which 4 credits must be in reading and 4 credits must be in writing; and

  • The literacy credits will be selected from a schedule of approved achievement standards and unit standards found on the NZQA website at Literacy requirements for University Entrance.

  • or equivalent to the above, or New Zealand University Entrance.

English requirements
All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level. Those applicants for whom English is not a first language must have:

  • An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall academic score of at least 6.0 issued within the last two years, with not less than 5.5 in any category; or

  • A test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 60 in the computer-based test (with a writing score of 20), or at least 550 in the paper-based test (with an essay score of 5 TWE), issued in the last two years; or

  • A qualification equivalent to the above; or

  • Complete two years study at a New Zealand secondary school and achieve either NCEA Level 3 or New Zealand University Entrance or both.
