What you will learn

  • The core competencies required by an HR professional - From recruitment to Health and Safety and learning and development, the HR world is full of challenge and opportunity. The skill base required is varied and challenging, and its important that you have a great knowledge of all aspects of HR so you can contribute effectively and appropriately. You will learn about the core areas of this integral business component and how to deliver on them effectively and well.

  • Minimise risk - A strong legal and ethical framework drives the HR function within both small and large organisations. It’s important that you understand the legalities associated with this field of work and that you know how to apply them effectively to minimise business risk.

  • Health and Safety - Ensuring staff are safe in the workplace is a core function of any HR team. There are strict regulations around Health and Safety requirements and its essential that all businesses get these right. You will gain a sound understanding of requirements and the tools to enable you to deliver effectively on these for your organisation.

  • Succession Planning - Great organisations plan for future success. They know how to develop and grow their people to ensure knowledge is shared and that the business will continue under changed circumstances. The HR team has a role to play in identifying prospective up and comers in the business and arming them with the skills to take on future leadership roles. You will learn how to deliver effectively on this component.

  • Performance Management - Businesses need their people and teams to be high performing. Great HR people can identify and deliver on that outcome ensuring you maximise individual potential and deal with poor performance as required. You will gain an understanding of the tools and techniques to maximise people performance.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A minimum of 14 numeracy credits at level 1 or higher in Mathematics or Pangarau on the Directory of Assessment Standards; and

  • Fifty credits at level 2 or above with at least 12 credits in each of three subjects including a minimum of 8 literacy credits at level 2 or higher in English or Te Reo Māori; of which 4 credits must be in reading and 4 credits must be in writing; and

  • The literacy credits will be selected from a schedule of approved achievement standards and unit standards found on the NZQA website at Literacy requirements for University Entrance.

  • or equivalent to the above, or New Zealand University Entrance.

English requirements
All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level. Those applicants for whom English is not a first language must have:

  • An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall academic score of at least 6.0 issued within the last two years, with not less than 5.5 in any category; or

  • A test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 60 in the computer-based test (with a writing score of 20), or at least 550 in the paper-based test (with an essay score of 5 TWE), issued in the last two years; or

  • A qualification equivalent to the above; or

  • Complete two years study at a New Zealand secondary school and achieve either NCEA Level 3 or New Zealand University Entrance or both.
