Our unique Māori World view, language and culture is an amazing point of difference recognised all over the globe! Mātauranga Māori (traditional Māori knowledge) has a huge contribution to make to help design principled-based solutions throughout the business world and wider community.
While designed with tangata whenua in mind, the Graduate Diploma in Māori Enterprise is actually for anyone who is interested in Māori enterprise. The major focuses on Māori values, practices and perspectives on organisations, business and industry.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

Hold a bachelor’s degree in any field except that of the Graduate Diploma to be studied

or demonstrate existing knowledge or experience at bachelor degree level, subject to Pathway Manager’s approval.
Applicants for whom English is not their first language must achieve an IELTS Academic score of no less than 6.0 (no bands lower than 5.5) or hold an equivalent score from a recognised alternative English Proficiency Test.
All applicants may be required to undertake an internal NorthTec English language placement test to confirm their current level of English proficiency. This will include writing and speaking components.

AMKT600 - Kaitiakitanga
Aim: Ākonga will understand kaitiakitanga in relation to manaakitanga and oranga, and other key related concepts, and apply their understanding in enterprise contexts.
On successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:
- Summarise the principles of kaitiakitanga, linking them to Te Ao Māori and comparable concepts from other world views.
- Evaluate the impact of business and industry on people and the environment from a traditional Māori perspective.
- Evaluate kaitiakitanga principles within the context of the current climate crisis.
- Evaluate the application of kaitiakitanga principles in a business and/or enterprise context.

AMMM600 - Mātauranga Māori
Aim: Ākonga will understand key elements of mātauranga Māori and manifest them in an enterprise context.
On successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:
- Evaluate the relevance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in a range of organisational contexts.
- Analyse the dimensions and applications of tikanga, in a range of enterprise contexts.
- Apply appropriate tikanga practices using basic te reo Māori to engage with whānau, hapū and iwi.
- Evaluate mātauranga Māori as a foundation for enterprise strategy and operations.

AMGA700 - Governance in Aotearoa
Aim: Ākonga will understand the principles and procedures for effective governance in a range of contexts within Aotearoa including key Māori perspectives.
On successful completion of this course, Ākonga will be able to:
- Critically evaluate the principles and guidelines of good governance practices
- Critically evaluate models of iwi, hapū, marae, and Māori enterprise governance.
- Evaluate the impacts of governance compliance requirements on organisations.
- Evaluate and design appropriate governance practice guidelines for specified Māori entities.

AMME700 - Māori Enterprise
Aim: Ākonga will understand the range of Māori enterprises, identify exemplars and evaluate the attributes of successful enterprises.
On successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:
- Critically analyse the development of Māori enterprise from pre-colonial contact including restraining and enabling factors.
- Critically evaluate exemplar Māori enterprises to identify and analyse success indicators locally, nationally and internationally.
- Critically evaluate resource acquisition practices.
- Design and justify a Māori enterprise operational practice enhancement.

AMIP700 - Industry Project
Aim: To develop capabilities related to chosen area of specialisation, in a “hands-on” immersion in industry practice.
To enable students to apply their learning, test the relevance of academic theories to the workplace and to reflect critically on this relationship between their academic study and industry practice.
To enable students to carry out a significant work assignment for the host organisation on a topic in a field allied to their major and present a project report in conjunction with an academic supervisor. The project forms the final component of the programme and requires students to produce work of the highest quality as evidence of their development
On successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Critically analyse and reflect upon the project experience in relation to relevant theories, concepts, models and current industry practice.
- Synthesise solutions and draw conclusions from the analysis of data.
- Produce a project report of professional standard that meets both academic requirements and the needs of the host organisation.
