NorthTec  Welcomes Standalone Status and Investment in Campus Relocation

NorthTec welcomes the announcement confirming  its return to operating as a standalone polytechnic on 1 January 2027,  alongside new government funding to relocate its main campus to central Whangārei.

These announcements mark a major  milestone in restoring independent delivery of vocational education in Northland.  The Minister for Vocational Education Hon Penny Simmonds has also indicated  that over time, NorthTec will join the Federation of Polytechnics, enabling  access to shared services and resources to support long-term viability.

NorthTec Operational Lead Derek  Slatter says the announcements reflect strong government confidence in  NorthTec’s role as a trusted education provider in the region.

“This is an exciting time for  vocational education in Northland. The Government has recognised our capability  in meeting the needs of learners, employers and the wider community, and to  operate sustainably as an independent institution.”

Mr Slatter also welcomes the  Government’s approval, in-principle, to fund work that will explore  relocating NorthTec’s Raumanga campus to a central Whangārei location.

“A centrally located campus would  be a strategic investment, creating a more accessible and visible education  presence. It would strengthen opportunities for collaboration with employers  and the community, and better connect learners and staff to public transport,  civic spaces and employment prospects,” he says.

Mr Slatter thanked NorthTec’s staff  and students - past and present, for their work in getting the institution to  this point. He also recognised support from Iwi, community, businesses as  well as central government and Whangārei District Council, who have worked  hard alongside the NorthTec team.

Any move to a central Whangārei  location will be subject to the development of a robust business case. The  proposal has the support of key local stakeholders, including Whangārei  District Council.

“This presents a valuable  opportunity to deepen our connection with the industries shaping Northland’s  future. We look forward to working closely with partners and the community as  this project progresses. In the meantime, it’s business as usual across our  existing campuses and we’ll stay close to our learners, staff and partners as  we move towards our transition in 2027.”
