Rigid Vehicles more than 6,001kg and less than 18,000kg

This NZTA approved training course provides essential training required to gain your Class 2 license (minimum heavy vehicle license).

After completing this course, you need to take your course certificate to a driver licensing agent, apply to have the new class added to your driver licence and pay the relevant fee.

What you will learn

The course involves in-class training to gain the required theoretical skills in road user law, driver fatigue management, and the legal requirements for log book recording of work time.

The course is NZQA based and the following unit standards are attained:

  • 24089 – Demonstrate knowledge of fatigue management, work time and driver logbook requirements.

  • 17574 – Operate a heavy rigid motor vehicle for a Class 2 driver licence.

Duration: 2-3 days.

You will need to provide the following to complete the course:

  • your driver’s licence (you must have held a full Class 1 licence for a minimum of six months)

  • a current Class 2 learners license. This involves a theory test of 35 general road code and 10 Class 2 specific specialist questions.

The official New Zealand Road Code for Heavy Vehicle Drivers provides all the information to pass the learner licence test.

The costs associated with the learner test and updating your license on completion of the course are the responsibility of the candidate and are costs over and above the course cost.
