Get all the skills you need to more into a senior role on in the travel and tourism industry. You’ll learn about local, national and international tourism operating environments, strategic leadership roles and styles, tourism market trends, business strategic systems and processes, sustainability, multi-media communications and much more.

Graduates of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge to work at a senior level in a tourism and travel related business. Roles may include business owner, tourism operations manager, business development manager and general manager, or trade development manager.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  1. Analyse and evaluate local, national and international tourism operating environments in order to effectively develop and guide strategic direction of a business in the tourism industry.
  2. Analyse strategic leadership roles and styles, and their potential impact on change management for a tourism enterprise.
  3. Develop, analyse and critique tourism market trends, and tourism business strategic systems and processes that enable the commercial development of a high-quality visitor experience and contribute to overall sustainability of an effective business.
  4. Prepare effective public relations campaigns including multi-media communications for a tourism business development.
  5. Investigate and evaluate a range of strategic business models to inform the development of improvements to environmental sustainability for a tourism business or tourism business development.
  6. Develop strategic investment plans for a tourism enterprise.

Entry Requirements

All applicants must:

  • be at least 16 years old at the time the programme commences.
  • be able to understand follow, and respond to instructions given in English.
  • be physically able to complete the programme specific outcomes

Applicants for whom English is not a first language must have an IELTS score of 5 with no band score lower than 5; or an accepted international equivalence.

Applicants must have:

  • NZ Diploma in Tourism and Travel (Level 5); or a recognised equivalent, Special and Discretionary Admission is available.

International applicants are required to have an IELTS score of 6.0 (general or academic) with no individual band lower than 5.5 from one test taken in the preceding two years, or an equivalent described in NZQA Rules.

This programme is not open to international students.

Youth Guarantee Fund*

If you are aged 16 to 24, you could study for FREE as part of the government's Youth Guarantee fund. To qualify for the Youth Guarantee fund, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Complete an application for a course that is covered by the Youth Guarantee fund.
  • Be a NZ citizen or permanent resident.
  • Be 16 to 24 years old at the time the course starts. Learners who are 15 years old and hold Ministry approved early leaving exemption from their school may also be eligible. This exemption must be in place before the course starts.

Priority places will be given to students who:

  • have not yet achieved NCEA Level 1 or NCEA Level 2; or
  • have completed a Level 1 or Level 2 qualification through a Youth Guarantee provision programme.
