Navigators

The Navigators deliver front-facing services from pre-enrolment of ākonga to completion of studies at NorthTec. Services will continue to be delivered at Raumanga, Dyer Street, Kaitaia, Dargaville and Kaikohe. The service aims to deliver a tikanga based model that supports ākonga as they journey from the time they enrol at North Tec to when they complete their studies. Navigators complete case assessments of ākonga needs, provide career advice, liaise with tutors and support staff; offers cultural mentors and delivers improved outcomes for ākonga. 

Navigator drop in times: 

  • Raumanga Campus: 10am-1.00pm Mon-Fri
  • Kaitaia Campus: 10am-1.00pm Mon-Thurs
  • Dyer Street: 10am-1.00pm Tuesday 
  • Reduced hours during the term break.

Navigator - Student Champion, Lead

Our Navigator-Lead, drives the delivery of a tikanga based model that underpins the practice of all Navigators- to promote cultural competency and better engagement with all ākonga, especially Māori ākonga, their whānau and communities. 

To achieve this the Navigator-Lead is responsible for:

  • providing cultural advice and support for ākonga, tutors, support staff and navigators, supporting navigators to complete case assessments in a timely manner;

  • co-ordinating wānanga to discuss ‘what matters to ākonga’ e.g. assessments in te reo Māori;

  • promoting campus mentors and industry leaders hui;

  • monitoring timely responses to ākonga and tutors request for support;

  • being a champion of our organisation values.

Navigator - Student Champion, Academic.

Our Navigator-Academic, is based at the Kaitaia Campus and proactively engages with ākonga who are finding it a challenge to adjust to our North Tec culture- academic expectations- programme assessments. To achieve this the navigator will work closely with ākonga, our tutors and ākonga whānau and other sources of support, to ensure ākonga are supported with:

  • completing your first assignment and or assessment,

  • essay writing skills,

  • referencing checks,

  • critical thinking process,

  • time management and

  • access to another friendly person on campus who wants you to achieve and to help you find a job. 

Our Navigator will also apply knowledge and understanding of te reo Māori & Māori tikanga in her day to day practice in order to fully engage with Māori ākonga and their whānau. Our Navigator is also a champion for our organisation values.

Navigator - Student Champion.

Our Navigator proactively engages with ākonga who are finding it a challenge to adjust to our North Tec culture- the organisations system, policies and processes. To achieve this the navigator will work closely with ākonga, our tutors and ākonga whānau and other sources of support, to ensure ākonga: 

  • overcome barriers to attending classes – finding your class, finding campus support services, travel issues, accommodation issues and ‘settling’ in issues,

  • complete their first assignment and or assessment,

  • can talk with someone if you are thinking about withdrawing,

  • understand their financial obligations and

  • has access to another friendly person on campus who ‘has your back’ and wants you to succeed and find a job. 

Our Navigator will apply knowledge and understanding of te reo Māori & Māori tikanga in her day to day practice in order to fully engage with Māori ākonga and their whānau.

Navigator Equity

Our Navigator Equity is based at the Raumanga campus to support ākonga who have a permanent or temporary disability to overcome any disadvantages to their study. Services include assessment for a reader-writer, advocacy and referrals to community services.
