Navigators - Student Support Champions

Te Whare Manaaki (Student Support Champions team) is here to help you on your journey, from enrolment to graduation. We have the knowledge and expertise to guide you through issues that may impact on your study and to help you make the most of your time at NorthTec.

The Navigators deliver front-facing services from pre-enrolment of ākonga to completion of studies at NorthTec. The service aims to deliver a tikanga based model that supports ākonga as they journey from the time they enrol at NorthTec to when they complete their studies. Navigators apply knowledge and understanding of te reo Māori & Māori tikanga in day to day practice in order to fully engage with Māori ākonga and their whānau.

Navigators complete case assessments of ākonga needs, provide career advice, liaise with tutors and support staff; offers cultural mentors and delivers improved outcomes for ākonga.

Examples of support:

  • Overcoming barriers to attending classes – finding your class, finding campus support services, travel issues, accommodation issues and ‘settling’ in issues,
  • Complete your first assignment or assessment,
  • Can facilitate discussion around withdrawing from your course
  • Understanding financial obligations
  • Being a friendly person on campus who ‘has your back’ and wants you to succeed
