Who will benefit?

This course is an introduction to workplace safety and is suitable for all employees including staff from the shop floor to supervisors and managers.

This course is compulsory for those wanting to achieve the National Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (Workplace Safety) (Level 3).

Learning outcomes

Trainees who complete this course will have knowledge and practical skills in the following areas:

  • A broad understanding of hazards and harm

  • The legal requirements relating to hazard identification and control

  • Identifying hazards and assessing risk

  • Hazard control options, monitoring and review

  • Practical skills in task and area analysis

  • The importance of health and safety in the workplace, including prevention of harm, legal compliance and benefits to the business

  • General requirements of the Health and Safety Employment Act 1992 including employer and employee duties

  • Effective health and safety systems and practices

  • Systematic identification and control of hazards

  • Emergency procedures.

17602: People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe hazards that may harm workers, the work environment,
and organisations; explain health and safety requirements for hazard control; describe hazard control methods; and identify
hazards and apply risk assessment procedures.

17593: People credited with this unit standard are able to identify the principles of workplace safety in a given workplace
and demonstrate safe work practices in a specific workplace.

497: People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify and describe legislative rights and responsibilities for
workplace health and safety; describe the systems approach to workplace health and safety; and explain how hazards are
defined in the HSE Act.
