How to book

  1. Download the SafeTrades Course Calendar to view the available dates

  2. Complete the SafeTrades Booking Form for the training required. The form has fields enabling you to book up to five people. If you want to book for more than five people, please enter the additional details in the Comments field.

  3. Those individuals who have not previously enrolled on a SafeTrades Short Course during the last year are also required to complete the NorthTec Online Enrolment Form. Each student only needs to do this ONCE per year.

Who will benefit?

This course is essential for any person who handles chemicals in the workplace and is designed as the first step for trainees intending to become an approved handler of hazardous substances.

PLEASE NOTE: This course does not complete the Approved Handlers’ process - Candidates are required to contact any Approved Handlers Certifier and provide them with documentation to meet the requirements to become an Approved Handler. Further advice on this process will be provided by the trainer on the day of the course.

Learning Outcomes

Trainees who complete this course will have knowledge and practical skills to:

  • Basic legislative requirements in relation to handling hazardous substances

  • Signage and labelling for typical hazardous substances in the workplace including HSNO requirements, UN, HAZCHEM, CAS numbers etc.

  • HSNO classification, Safety Data Sheets, and other sources of information

  • Principles of safe handling of a range of hazardous substances including flammables, corrosives and toxics, including compatibility issues, PPE requirements, secondary containment and spill control

  • Principles of safe storage of hazardous substances.

  • Describe the key aims of the HSNO Act and how it developed

  • Describe who the key agencies are under the HSNO Act and their roles

  • Understand the hazard classifications of Classes 2,3,4,5,6,8 and 9 Hazard Substances commonly found at an industrial workplace, and their potential adverse effects

  • Describe the regulations and default controls that apply in respect of the specified substances; and know any changes to default controls in respect of the specified substances

  • Describe the procedures to adopt in an emergency involving those substances

  • Understand the Approved handler’s obligations and liabilities under the Act

  • Describe the role of test certifiers.
