Introduction to Elements of Whakairo Design

This course will introduce learners to the basic elements of toi whakairo by utilising foundational rangahau practice relevant to toi Māori and applying it through design, rote learning and making. It will encourage the engagement of learners by offering a variety of learning styles within a kaupapa wānanga environment that is interactive and practical in application.

This course is designed specifically to introduce and familiarise learners to basic elements of whakairo design including:

  • Introduction to tikanga practices associated with whakairo design

  • Relevant karakia, mōteatea and pūrakau

  • Maintenance, care and identification of relevant carving tools

  • Identification of the parts of the whare whakairo (carved meeting house)

  • Identification of basic form and whakarei

  • Manufacture and design of basic whakairo form
