Who will benefit?

This course is ideal for fire wardens and emergency co-ordinators that need the skills to react decisively and effectively in the event of a fire or emergency situation. This is a practical, hands on course for fire wardens, anyone involved in hot work (e.g., welding) and others who may work alone in a building or site from time to time.

Learning outcomes

Trainees who complete this course will have knowledge and practical skills in the following areas:

  • Identify the responsibilities of employers and employees with regard to emergency procedures under the Health and Safety in Employment Act (1992)

  • Demonstrate knowledge of evacuation requirements for a particular workplace or site

  • Identify and explain the key positions in the organisational structure including duties for those key positions

  • Understand human reactions and behaviours in an emergency situation

  • Identify and explain prevention measures and the key elements of the main types of emergencies

  • Explain the fire triangle, classes of fire, the categories of fire extinguisher and their application and operation.

  • Trainees who complete this course will have knowledge and practical skills to:

  • Understand the basic principles of the chemistry and physics of fire

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the fire classes and fire suppression techniques

  • Select and implement a strategy to deal with fire

  • Practically demonstrate fire suppression techniques.

18404: People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of evacuation requirements for a
particular workplace or site, and explain the duties of a Fire and Emergency Warden.

3271: Demonstrate knowledge of the fire classes and fire suppression techniques, and select and implement a strategy to
deal with fire. This unit standard is applicable to members of the general public in industrial and domestic situations.

4647: This unit standard is primarily for personnel whose duties involve fire and rescue response in the workplace and will
also be relevant to other learners who anticipate the need to use hand-held fire extinguishers in industrial or domestic
situations. People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of the basic principles of the chemistry
of fire and the basic principles of the physics of fire.
