About this programme

This is the next step after the NZ Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support) (Level 3) and is equivalent to the second year of an industry apprenticeship. Graduates of this programme will be able to:

  • Perform client consultations, including hair and scalp analysis in relation to chemical services.

  • Recommend home hair care products to meet a range of client needs.

  • Perform complex styling tasks, including blow waving, finger waving, setting and long hair-ups.

  • Perform foundation scissor and razor cutting services.

  • Select colour and perform a range of colouring and de-colouring services.

  • Assist colleagues with a range of chemical reformation services, including application and neutralising.

What you will learn

You will learn a wide range of hairdressing skills at an intermediate level including:

  • scissor, clipper and razor cutting

  • advanced long hair styling

  • permanent colour

  • foiling and corrective treatments

  • colour correction

  • chemical reformation

  • bleach and tone as well as finger waving.

You’ll also further develop your interpersonal skills and professional manner. 

Workload & schedule

Our course hours are Monday to Thursday, 9am to 3pm. Friday is a self-directed learning day which may be spent at NorthTec or on work experience or studying from home. Students may be required to come in to NorthTec on Fridays to catch up on work.

Practical skills are first built on mannequin heads progressing to clients as you build your skills and then onto time spent in the salon working on clients in a commercial salon setting at NorthTec, skill-building and progressing towards final assessments.

Additional costs

While attending a NorthTec hairdressing course students are required to wear a uniform, we recommend purchasing two at a cost of approx. $130. Black pants and closed in shoes are also a requirement.

For Year 1 students, your kit is included in your fees. Year 2 students are required to add items to this kit (e.g. scissors and clippers are two of the items). These, along with the other items, can be purchased either through NorthTec or by the students however they must be professional hairdressing brands.

Basic stationary including a USB is also required.

The GHD company also offer straighteners to students at  a greatly reduced price and many students purchase these through course related costs.

Entry requirements

All applicants must:

  • be at least 16 years old at the time the programme commences

  • be able to read, write, and communicate in English at a basic level

  • be physically able to complete the programme specific outcomes

Preference is given to those who have successfully completed the NZ Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support) (Level 3).

Applicants for whom English is not a first language must have and IELTS score of 5 with no band score lower than 5; or an accepted international equivalence.
