About the programme

Studying hairdressing at NorthTec will prepare you for the real world of professional styling. Based at a purpose-built salon, our hairdressing programmes provide the opportunity to really get the feel of a working environment, complete with open days for paying public customers. Not only will you develop key hairdressing techniques, you’ll also gain confidence and the communications and customer service skills you need to succeed in the hairdressing industry.

What you will learn

This programme is equivalent to completing the first year of an industry apprenticeship and will teach you key hairdressing skills like long hair styling, colouring, blow-waving, foils, setting hair and an introduction to cutting. You’ll also learn about hairdressing products and how to sell them as well 
as focusing on customer service, communication and personal presentation.

You will learn a wide range of hairdressing skills at a beginner level including:

  • Assisting the stylist during services 

  • Professional code of ethics

  • Consultation procedure

  • Long hair styling

  • Hair products and maintenance

  • Self-styling: Appropriate hair, clothing, make-up.

Successful completion of Year 1 allows student to enrol into the NZ Certificate in Hairdressing (Emerging Stylist) (Level 4).

Workload & schedule

Our programme hours are Monday to Thursday 9-3. Friday is a self-directed learning days which may be spent at NorthTec or on work experience or studying from home. Students may be required to come in to NorthTec on Fridays to catch-up on work.

The first two terms of the programme (Semester 1) are a mixture of theory and practical focusing on four courses:

0002 - Understanding the Client Journey 3 15
0003 - Introduction to Hair and Scalp Analysis 3 10
0004 - Introduction to Design and Styling 3 20

The last two terms (Semester 2) are again a mixture of theory and practical and focus on the remaining four courses:

Compulsory Courses – Semester 2 Level Credits
0005 - Wet to Dry Styling 3 20
0006 - Introduction to Haircutting 3 10
0007 - Introduction to Colouring and Chemical Reformation 3 15
0008 - Introduction to Salon Operations 3 20

Practical skills are first built on mannequin heads progressing to clients as you build your skills and then onto time spent in the salon working on clients in a commercial salon setting at NorthTec, skill-building and progressing towards final assessments.

Additional costs

  • Students are required to wear a uniform, we recommend purchasing TWO at a cost of approximately $100.

  • Black pants and closed in shoes are a requirement.

  • Kit is included in the fees for year 1 students. Year 2 students are required to add items to this kit (e.g. radial brushes and clippers are two of the items).

  • Basic stationery including a USB is also required

These, along with the other items, can be purchased either through NorthTec or by the students however they must be professional hairdressing brands. The GHD company also offer straighteners to students at a greatly reduced price and many students purchase these through course-related costs.

​After completing this programme, you could go on to further study with the NZ Certificate in Hairdressing (Emerging Stylist) (Level 4).

Entry requirements 

All applicants must:

  • be at least 16 years old at the time the programme commences

  • be able to read, write, and communicate in English at a basic level

  • be physically able to complete the programme specific outcomes

For a small number of programmes a police check or declaration about criminal convictions may be required. Students will be notified if this is required for the programme they are applying for.

Applicants for whom English is not a first language must have and IELTS score of 5 with no band score lower than 5; or an accepted international equivalence.

Qualification gained

New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support) (Level 3)

Successful completion allows students to enrol into the NZ Certificate in Hairdressing (Emerging Stylist) (Level 4).
