What you will learn

  • Understand Health and Safety requirements -  Ensuring a safe and healthy environment for staff and customers is essential for anyone involved in leading a business.   You will learn the legal requirements around Health and Safety and how to implement these from a practical perspective.

  • Learn about stock management and product sourcing - Understanding how to source the right product and ensure you have the right quantities of stock available at the right times is a real skill. The course will provide the knowledge to help you manage this key aspect of sales.

  • Gain knowledge of consumer law - If you are working in retail you need a good knowledge of consumer law and its application to the retail sector. The course will give you a sound understanding of the range of Acts like Fair Trading, Lay by, after sales service and Consumer Finance that apply and how you need to take account of these when doing business.

  • Sell well - Learn about buyer behaviour, sales methodologies, client needs and sales transactions to ensure you deliver the best in customer service and maximise your sales opportunities.

  • Become a good marketer - Successful sales people understand the techniques associated with good marketing. Make sure that you know about these techniques and how you can use them to achieve results.

  • Manage your sales team performance - Make sure you and your team perform to the highest level! Excellent team performance requires effective engagement and training– learn the skills to help your team achieve.

Entry requirements

All applicants must:

  • be at least 16 years of age at the time of enrolment into the programme;

  • Hold 40 credits at NZEA (Level 1), including 10 literacy credits and 10 numeracy credits; or New Zealand Certificate in Retail (Level 3);

  • Be currently working in a retail environment.

Applicants, for whom English is not a first language, must achieve an IELTS General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band lower than 5.0 or hold an accepted international equivalence.
