Get the skills knowledge to carry out operational conservation work
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

Use a range of technological systems and techniques to support conservation purposes.

Apply conservation information management procedures to meet legislative and organisational requirements while carrying out operational conservation work.
-
Assess and maintain conservation infrastructure to contribute to the sustainable stewardship of the environment.
-
Carry out activities safely in a conservation setting while maintaining personal and public safety.
-
Assess and apply ecological, heritage and recreational principles to activities undertaken in wider conservation settings.
-
Communicate appropriately with stakeholders in a professional manner while carrying out operational conservation work.

Operate in a manner consistent with the Treaty of Waitangi, including respect for local iwi or hapu tikanga and kawa, while carrying out conservation work.
Entry Requirements
All applicants must:

be at least 16 years old at the time the programme commences
-
be able to read, write, and communicate in English at a basic level
-
be physically able to complete the programme specific outcomes
Applicants for whom English is not a first language must have an IELTS General or Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5 or an accepted international equivalence.
All international applicants may be required to undertake an internal NorthTec English language placement test to confirm their current level of English proficiency. This will include writing and speaking components.

3001 - Quads and LUVs
Aim: To provide students with the knowledge and skills required to safely operate light utility vehicles (LUVs) and quad bikes with trailed equipment on flat ground and carry out basic
maintenance of the machine.
On successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Explain the factors that influence light utility vehicle and quad bike traction and stability, and the methods used to improve vehicle stability and control.
- Carry‐out pre‐drive and maintenance checks for light utility vehicles and quad bikes, and report or repair any damage or faults.
- Apply safe operating principles to drive a quad and LUV with trailed equipment, including recognising and responding to factors that influence vehicle stability and traction.

3002 - Chainsaw Safety, Servicing and Use
Aim: To provide students with the skills and knowledge to maintain and safely use a chainsaw in an occasional‐user primary industry context. Students will learn about chainsaw features and components, personal protective equipment, the accepted rules for chainsaw use, safe work practices and different chainsaw cuts.
On successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Interpret and explain rules, requirements and legislation relevant to the use of chainsaws.
- Describe and demonstrate safety and mechanical features of a chainsaw.
- Carry out maintenance of a chainsaw including the engine, bar and chain.
- Safely operate a chainsaw to complete up cuts, down cuts, bore cuts and basic cutting of a fallen tree.

4001 - Introduction to Ecology
Aim: To enable students to gain an understanding of principles of ecology that are fundamental to conservation of the natural environment of New Zealand.
On successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Describe and discuss the principles that underpin how an ecosystem functions.
- Discuss the geological and biological origins of New Zealand.
- Identify and describe key New Zealand habitats.
- Recognise and describe a range of plants and animals.

4002 - Outdoor Risk Management
Aim: To enable students to gain an understanding of legal frameworks and other responsibilities
that influence the delivery of conservation operations within New Zealand.
On successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Describe and discuss NZ legislation related to Health and Safety.
- Apply principles of Health and Safety to ensure a safe working environment.
- Apply principles of basic first aid.

4003 - Conservation Management Planning
Aim: To enable students to be able to develop and then implement a conservation management plan.
On successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Describe and discuss the core principles, purpose and application of the RMA (Resource Management Act).
- Discuss and apply the New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy.
- Discuss key conservation risks in New Zealand (e.g. invasive species, land degradation and habitat loss).
- Identify key uses of land set aside for conservation including eco‐tourism, recreation and biodiversity.
- Prepare and implement a conservation management plan following Department of Conservation format.

4004 - Community and Teamwork
Aim: To enable students to gain knowledge that will allow them to engage as a conservation professional with communities and colleagues.
On successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Recognise and show an awareness of a Māori world view to conservation management.
- Effectively engage with a range of stakeholders with regards to conservation management planning and decision making.
- Effectively engage with colleagues when working in a team environment.

4005 - Agrichemical Use and Pest Control
Aim: To provide students with the skills and knowledge to be able to develop a plant pest control plan, understand the conservation implications of the use of agrichemicals and to safely mix and apply agrichemicals.
On successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Interpret health and safety legislation and requirements relevant to the use of agrichemicals.
- Calibrate spray equipment and mix and apply agrichemicals.
- Explain conservation implications of the use of agrichemicals and poisons.
- Investigate pest control options and carry out pest control.
- Develop a pest control plan for a specific situation.

4006 - Maintaining the Conservation Estate
Aim: To provide students with the skills and knowledge to plan and carry out a range of
conservation infrastructure maintenance tasks.
On successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Assess the general condition of conservation infrastructure.
- Complete an infrastructure repairs and maintenance plan for a conservation setting.
- Carry out a range of infrastructure repairs and maintenance tasks.
- Work effectively, efficiently and safely in a practical environment.
