This programme is recommended for new managers, or staff that are looking to be promoted into a leadership role. You’ll learn how to communicate effectively with your team, provide overall management, contribute to the achievement of team aims and solve problems in the workplace.

This programme leads onto the New Zealand Certificate in Business (First Line Management) (Level 4).

Coaching Support

Unsure about studying online? Face to face on-campus sessions are available for this programme in Kaitaia, Kerikeri, Kaikohe and Whangārei.  You will be able to get support for course related questions and assessment work.

How will I learn?

You can fit your study around your work, family and lifestyle – there is no need to be a full-time student while studying with TANZ eCampus. You can work and learn. All study is completely online – with supportive facilitators and advisors to help you along the way.

Coaching support and study spaces

NorthTec offers study spaces where you will be able to meet new people, gain support from an experienced tutor in this field, put a face to the names on your forums and learn more about the course. We have free Wi-Fi, kitchenette, coffee, tea, snacks and milo.

Take advantage of highly skilled and experienced tutors accessible to answer questions and provide you the support to help, guide and direct you.

What you will learn

You will learn to:

  • Become a team leader: Learn the practical skills to become a team leader.  This course will introduce you to the world of management – giving you the confidence to supervise a small team or take on a junior management role in your workplace.  Understand your leadership style and how to deliver effective team performance.

  • Become a problem solver: Learn how to find solutions not problems. Become a confident and assertive decision maker.

  • Learn the tools to handle conflict: All managers need to be able to handle difficult situations. Learn the techniques to stand up and deliver everyday feedback to your team.

  • Be a communicator: Develop the communications skills required to be a team leader. Learn how to confidently report to senior management and work cooperatively in your team.

  • Learn the importance of goal setting: Every team needs to have targets they are working to achieve. Drive success in your organisation– learn the skills to set team goals, motivate and then meet those objectives. Become an effective team leader.

  • Be confident: Confidently lead your team – be ready and capable.

  • Learn the skills to manage resources: Gain the skills required for everyday management –  for example staff rosters, time management and quality control.

Entry Requirements

All applicants must:

  • be at least 16 years old at the time the programme commences

  • be able to read, write, and communicate in English at a basic level

  • be physically able to complete the programme-specific outcomes.

Applicants for whom English is not a first language must have an IELTS score of 5 with no band score lower than 5; or an accepted international equivalence.
