This course is for people who are single source, comb, or medical grade manuka honey producers; pollination service providers; or self-marketing producers.
This programme follows on from the New Zealand Certificate in Apiculture (Level 3)
You will learn to:
-
Implement and monitor annual and seasonal beehive management plans.
-
Implement and monitor a plan for the management of exotic and endemic pests and diseases in the beehive.

Implement and monitor a Risk Management Programme for safe beehive products.
-
Analyse beehive management and pest and disease management plans, and recommend improvements.
Entry Requirements
All applicants must:

be at least 16 years old at the time the programme commences

be able to read, write, and communicate in English at a basic level
-
be physically able to complete the programme specific outcomes
-
have completed New Zealand Certificate in Apiculture (Level 3) or have equivalent knowledge and experience.

4001 - Seasonal Beehive Management
Aim: To introduce learners to the relationships between bees, flowering plants and pollination.
On successful completion of this course,the student will be able to:
- Explain the impact of weather on the relationship between flowering plants and bees.
- Explain the relationship between bees, arable crops and crop pollination.
- Describe the nutritional requirements and feed types for bees and beehives.
- Develop, implement and monitor an annual beehive nutritional management plan.

4002 - Managing Diseases, Pests and Disorders
Aim: To enable learners to recognise bee diseases, pests and disorders,and to manage these throughout the beekeeping season.
On successful completion of this course,the student will be able to:
- Describe the diseases, disorders and pests,which threaten the NZ beekeeping industry.
- Discuss the impacts and implications of diseases, disorders and pests on the NZ economy and ecology.
- Outline effective current practices for managing beehive pests, diseases and disorders.
- Develop, implement and monitor an annual bee disease management plan.

4003 - Managing Risk to Food Production and Safety
Aim: To enable learners to develop and implement a seasonal operational management plan for apiaries and beehives.
On successful completion of this course,the student will be able to:
- Explain the workplace health and safety requirements and compliance procedures relating to a range of apiculture and food production operations.
- Develop and implement a risk management plan to meet both food production and apiary safety requirements.
- Manage and monitor beehive operations in accordance with the risk management plan.
- Implement and monitor food safety plan in an apiculture business.

4004 - Production of Beehive Products
Aim: To enable learners to understand the production, processing and trading requirements to establish and maintain a viable apiculture business.
On successful completion of this course,the student will be able to:
- Describe honey properties, types, production methods and quality requirements.
- Describe procedures to eliminate or minimise the risk of contamination in honey production.
- Identify and describe the properties and production of beehive products other than honey.
- Develop a business plan for a small apiculture business.
