“I decided to do the beauty course because it's something that I've been passionate about my whole life. So, it just seemed like the right path to go down.” “I think going into like beauty, you just think its makeup, and nails and the usual stuff but then you realize there's so much more to it. There’s are real art and flow to it with very important techniques and it’s not as simple as people think it is. There’s so much to learn. It’s been great.” “I’ve learnt so much more than I thought I would. Like massage and how to properly take care of your skin.” “I want to get out into the industry and work for a bit. But then my dream is to own my own business. I want to do something different and be mobile and focus mostly on mums and kids. When I was a mum, the best thing would be if someone could come to my house to do my nails or a pamper session. That’s what I want to do.” “I already had a passion for it, but NorthTec has given me the skills and confidence to get out there and really make a career out of it.” “My tutors have been amazing the whole way through, I’ve also had the best classmates, we’re all very sad the course is almost over.” “I've got four kids, I needed to work around my children. That’s why I chose NorthTec. So many of the students and tutors are parents too. And in my course, they made sure our holidays lined up with the school holidays, which made it so much easier.” “If you're a mom and you want to do this course, then do it. They make the hours work for you.”

“I’m so glad I chose this course. Everyone is so comfortable with each other that it feels like one big family and we have a lot of fun together.”
Huia had just finished school and was working at a job in the holidays that got her thinking about what she wanted to do as a career. “I’ve always been interested in make-up and beauty so searched for what training was available locally then found this and got accepted. I’m surprised and pleased at how quickly I’m picking things up because I was concerned I might not get it.”
“By doing this training I will have an internationally recognized qualification but hope to first get a job locally and gain more experience. Who knows what will unfold from that.”
“I encourage anyone to go with your gut in deciding what to do with your life. For me, doing something I really didn...
“I spent two years working in something I really didn’t like, before deciding it was a priority to go for what I had a passion for.” Meg had always loved tinkering with beauty and make-up when she was at school but didn’t want to jump straight into it from year 12, so decided instead to work in administration. “After two years I realised I didn’t want to be stuck behind a desk doing admin, so I explored study options in beauty that were close to home.”
“This hands-on course is perfect for me with the bonus of lot of new friends who share my interest in beauty. I especially like the challenge of being stretched out of my comfort zone. The support from the tutor and the other students make this possible because they feel like family.”
“We have a salon practice here as part of the course and that has given me more confidence with being hands-on with people. One thing I struggled with initially was waxing because I didn’t like the idea of hurting people, but once I realized that they considered it was helping them, I gradually became OK with it.”
Meg is already working part-time in a salon in town plus she works part time as a model in Auckland so has to balance study with her work. “It’s so worth it because our beauty therapy training is valid anywhere in the world. When I finish the course I’ll get more days at my current salon job and will be able to do more training there. In this industry I love that we can continue to learn as we go, and I’m looking forward to getting more experience and seeing what unfolds.”
“I encourage anyone to go with your gut in deciding what to do with your life. For me, doing something I really didn’t like for two years was what gave me the motivation to go for what I love.”
“Doing this course has put me on a career path around the world that I could never have imagined."
“It was such a surprise to be accepted into this course and now it has opened doors to a world I didn’t even know existed. When I finished school in Kaitaia I didn’t know what I wanted to do but I’ve always been keen on things to do with beauty and it was time to expand my life outside of Kaitaia. So I applied for this course, got accepted, and I now love everything about it.”
“I knew no-one when I moved here which was hard at first but the support of the students and the tutor got me through. Another surprise was the range of what we learn. I was expecting the focus to be on make-up but we also learn anatomy, physiology, waxing and massaging, which is a challenge for me but in a good way.”
“Doing this course has put me on a career path around the world that I could never have imagined. I want to work on a cruise ship, and through the tutor’s connections here I have an interview coming up that hopefully will lead to six weeks training in the UK before signing up for a nine month contract on a cruise ship. It’s so exciting and something I would never have expected or even dreamed about - I can be working doing something I love while travelling the world!”
“My next step is to succeed at the interview and get the contract, then return home and get a job for even more experience. Later I’d love to have my own business offering a wide range of beauty therapy.”
