Grace Woodhouse - Automotive Engineering

Meet Grace Woodhouse, a current learner of the NZ Certificate in Automotive Engineering Level 3.

“I was in the working the hospitality industry, but it wasn't something I was passionate about. It was just a way to make money. But I always did like working on cars, and knowing how to fix something really appealed to me. So, I decided to take the chance and give it a go.”

“I had a lot of self-doubt coming in, I thought ‘I'm just like a young person. I won't understand’. But you grow with your classmates, and as you get to know your tutors you actually can pick up quite a lot if you just put your head down and get into it.”

“Now I can go out and service some of my friends’ cars, or my families. People will ask me ‘Can you come over and help me with this tire?’ And you know what? I actually can, I do not what’s wrong and I can fix it. That’s the best thing I’ve taken from this course, the confidence.”

“Long term, I want to become a qualified mechanic. The options there to do the level four course, which would give me 120 hours of mechanic work under my belt. Then I’d like to go into the navy and do the course as a marine engineer on the ships. That way if its not for me or I finish with the navy I would have something to fall back on.”

“NorthTec was pretty much the most convenient for me. Why would I go down to Auckland where I have something right next to me in my hometown? NorthTec has been great, they don’t baby you, but they teach you everything you need to know. They teach you independence and self-motivation. If you want to learn, you will go far.”
