“I’ve always wanted to be a make-up artist but my interest in it has grown even more since being here. I’m amazed at what else is involved and how well I’m doing.”
“I’m loving learning and finding out new things. I dropped out of school in year 13 and thought I was dumb, but I’m getting high grades here because I’m so keen and get such great support. I’ve met a lot of new best friends.”
“The theory is a challenge but it’s a challenge I love because we’re learning about muscles and nerves and it’s so related and applied to our work. I want to help people feel beautiful. I’m surprised at how much I love waxing and some of the other treatments.”
“I’m going to Australia next year because my partner is a professional squash player, so this ticket will give me so many opportunities to get work there - maybe even specializing in waxing.”
“This course can really open doors and has made me so happy and confident. This is an international ticket and longer term I want to be a professional make-up artist for famous people. I want to be thought of highly in my field.”

“I’ve always enjoyed doing make-up and helping other people to feel good. I knew one of tutors here plus some others who were coming to the course, so I signed up straight from school.”
“The tutors here really want you to pass, are helpful and make you feel inspired and confident. At the moment I’m enjoying waxing and spray tanning, and the make-up that we do soon will be fun. More of a challenge for me is learning the different techniques for nails and then developing our own technique. Learning all the muscles for massage also takes study and discipline but it’s really interesting.”
“This qualification gives me a career I can do anywhere. I’ll always have it behind me and this is one of the fastest growing courses in the industry just now. When I finish the course I’ll work in Whangarei for a while to get experience then I’m keen to travel. I’ll see what unfolds. It would be good to be well known in an area for being good at some aspect in the industry.”

“I’ve always liked makeup and watched lots about it on YouTube. I also studied beauty consultancy in town while I was still at school. When I explored training options, NorthTec seemed the most compact and value-for-money choice.”
“I enjoy being here so much that it doesn't feel like learning. There is such a huge difference from school and I really look forward to coming here every day. The environment is great and the classes and students are fun but we still learn so much.”
“Our class is really close and because we’re all different ages and have different views on life, we’re also building tolerance. The tutor is like one of us and is really understanding if life happens to us and we have to adjust our usual schedule, or catch up at a different time.”
“At the moment I’m really enjoying waxing and find it satisfying seeing the results. I’m surprised how much I like learning anatomy and physiology. This knowledge makes everything else make sense and having that understanding makes me feel more secure about what I am doing.”
“I want to keep learning throughout my career but this qualification will put me in a really good starting place. I’ll enter the industry with more confidence, more knowledge and more credibility and I’ll progress faster. NorthTec teaches you what you need to know, then you can go on and learn more advanced or specialist aspects within the industry.”
“I want to work in cruise ships when I finish the course. You can get a nine-month contract where you work crazy hours, but it’s a great way to get experience, save money and travel at the same time. Before going on cruise ships, I’ll do the six-week Steiner Salon training in London which specifically prepares you for cruise ship work. It’s an intense training but it’s a huge plus for your CV and will combine really well with the internationally-recognised City and Guild certificates we get here.”
“During that time I’ll be open to any possibilities that present anywhere in the world.”

“I’m so glad I chose this course. Everyone is so comfortable with each other that it feels like one big family and we have a lot of fun together.”
Huia had just finished school and was working at a job in the holidays that got her thinking about what she wanted to do as a career. “I’ve always been interested in make-up and beauty so searched for what training was available locally then found this and got accepted. I’m surprised and pleased at how quickly I’m picking things up because I was concerned I might not get it.”
“By doing this training I will have an internationally recognized qualification but hope to first get a job locally and gain more experience. Who knows what will unfold from that.”

“I spent two years working in something I really didn’t like, before deciding it was a priority to go for what I had a passion for.” Meg had always loved tinkering with beauty and make-up when she was at school but didn’t want to jump straight into it from year 12, so decided instead to work in administration. “After two years I realised I didn’t want to be stuck behind a desk doing admin, so I explored study options in beauty that were close to home.”
“This hands-on course is perfect for me with the bonus of lot of new friends who share my interest in beauty. I especially like the challenge of being stretched out of my comfort zone. The support from the tutor and the other students make this possible because they feel like family.”
“We have a salon practice here as part of the course and that has given me more confidence with being hands-on with people. One thing I struggled with initially was waxing because I didn’t like the idea of hurting people, but once I realized that they considered it was helping them, I gradually became OK with it.”
Meg is already working part-time in a salon in town plus she works part time as a model in Auckland so has to balance study with her work. “It’s so worth it because our beauty therapy training is valid anywhere in the world. When I finish the course I’ll get more days at my current salon job and will be able to do more training there. In this industry I love that we can continue to learn as we go, and I’m looking forward to getting more experience and seeing what unfolds.”
“I encourage anyone to go with your gut in deciding what to do with your life. For me, doing something I really didn’t like for two years was what gave me the motivation to go for what I love.”
“Doing this course has put me on a career path around the world that I could never have imagined."
“It was such a surprise to be accepted into this course and now it has opened doors to a world I didn’t even know existed. When I finished school in Kaitaia I didn’t know what I wanted to do but I’ve always been keen on things to do with beauty and it was time to expand my life outside of Kaitaia. So I applied for this course, got accepted, and I now love everything about it.”
“I knew no-one when I moved here which was hard at first but the support of the students and the tutor got me through. Another surprise was the range of what we learn. I was expecting the focus to be on make-up but we also learn anatomy, physiology, waxing and massaging, which is a challenge for me but in a good way.”
“Doing this course has put me on a career path around the world that I could never have imagined. I want to work on a cruise ship, and through the tutor’s connections here I have an interview coming up that hopefully will lead to six weeks training in the UK before signing up for a nine month contract on a cruise ship. It’s so exciting and something I would never have expected or even dreamed about - I can be working doing something I love while travelling the world!”
“My next step is to succeed at the interview and get the contract, then return home and get a job for even more experience. Later I’d love to have my own business offering a wide range of beauty therapy.”
