Jan Dawson

Hairdressing Tutor

“I love it when the students finally ‘get it’. They realise why I make them repeat a skill sometimes and do it better.”
After a solid hairdressing background, Jan has been teaching hairdressing for 14 years with the last few of those at NorthTec. “The opportunities here are great because you are encouraged to upskill in any area. I did a Diploma in Teaching as part of my Professional Development and realise I love the actual teaching process.”
“My philosophy is to make the course as near as possible to industry expectations. I expect students to be reliable, on time, and to take the initiative. It doesn’t suit everyone. A good hairdresser needs to have a natural flair, good personal presentation, and good customer service skills.”
“Part of the interview for the new advanced two year course is practical so we can get a feel for whether the applicants have a natural flair.”
“The biggest challenge is keeping this generation engaged! The content has to be constantly relevant. Hairdressing tends to attract practical people but there are still several necessary theory components.”
Jan sees NorthTec as a key place of learning throughout the Northland region. “NorthTec is about producing students that are work-ready for employers and it has a strong industry interface. As tutors our professional industry reputation is at stake.”
Jan is on the NorthTec Workplace Wellness Committee, the anti-bullying Steering Group, and plays on the staff netball team.
“I have a personal and professional interest in wellness. Hairdressers work long days and need to eat, sleep, and exercise well to avoid symptoms of Occupational Over-use Syndrome and enjoy their work.”
