NorthTec to continue distance learning under Alert Level 3

23 April 2020

NorthTec students will continue to study remotely when the country moves into Pandemic Alert Level 3 next week.

Tutors will continue to deliver lessons and tutorials remotely through a combination of digital and online methods, including virtual lectures via Zoom and online theory teaching.

This complies with Government directives for tertiary education under Alert Level 3, and is aimed at ensuring the safety of students and staff. Some staff will now be allowed onto campus to prepare further teaching materials and resources, under specific conditions including maintaining social distancing at all times.

Acting Chief Executive, Wayne Jackson, said that overall, students and staff have coped well with the lockdown and lessons have continued as planned despite being taught remotely.

He said: “Some staff have come up with innovative methods of teaching during the lockdown, and we have all learned a lot about the possibilities of distance learning. While this has been a challenging period for everyone, I am impressed with the way that both staff and student groups have come together to work through it.

“As an organisation we have provided a lot of support to our students, to help them study from home and cope during this unprecedented time.

“We have maintained frequent contact with our students, kept them informed of all developments and offered support ranging from health advice to financial assistance, while NorthTec’s ICT department has worked hard to ensure that all our students are able to study from home. We have also provided extensive support to our international students who are coping with the pandemic while being far away from home.

“We will now continue teaching while under Alert Level 3, and will reassess the situation as and when required, under Government instruction.”
