NorthTec to celebrate International Nurses Day

NorthTec’s nursing department is gearing up to celebrate International Nurses Day, in the International Year of the Nurse.

However, given the current pandemic which has seen nursing staff around the world working hard on the frontline, this year’s celebrations on Tuesday, May 12 will be held remotely as NorthTec staff continue working from home under Alert Level 3.

NorthTec nursing tutors have been preparing for a return to frontline work, if required, to support the efforts of Northland District Health Board staff throughout the pandemic.

They have also been working hard to continue delivering lessons and tutorials to their students through a variety of digital and online methods, while providing support for any students who are finding the current situation tough to deal with.

Dr Bev MacKay, NorthTec’s Pathway Manager for Nursing, said: “International Nurses Day is an opportunity for us to celebrate the professionalism of our nurses. It is especially relevant this year, with 2020 being the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife - and of course with healthcare being in the spotlight globally as the world struggles with the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Around the world we’ve seen media coverage portraying nurses as being heroes or angels. We nurses don’t see it that way – we are professionals who are dedicated to our work and our patients. Whatever setting we work in, we chose to become nurses so that we could make a difference to peoples’ lives.

“At NorthTec we see this in our students – whatever their background, they have all chosen to train as nurses because they care about people and want to help their community. We are proud that each year we are able to send our graduates out, ready and able to join the nursing workforce, with many pursuing their careers here in Northland Te Tai Tokerau.”

The NorthTec celebrations on Tuesday will be held remotely, with tutors preparing virtual messaging about why they are so proud to be professional nurses.
