Tuakana Teina Hui 2019: Introducing Māori health concepts and views from around Te Tai Tokerau

The Tuakana Teina Hui was hosted at NorthTec last Saturday in collaboration with the New Zealand Nurses Organisation Te Rūnanga ō Te Taitokerau and generously sponsored by Te Rau Ora, Te Āwhiowhio ō Ōtangarei Trust, Ngāti Whatua, Ngāti Hine Hauora, NorthTec's Student Voice and New Zealand Nurses Organisation Regional Council. He mihi nui tenei ki a rātou katoa.

The Tuakana Teina Hui is held each year as a way to introduce Māori nursing students to the Māori nursing community in Te Tai Tokerau. It fosters whanaungatanga (relationships) and manaakitanga (support) through kotahitanga (togetherness) and mātauranga Māori (Māori ways of knowing). The day was filled with lots of inspiring and invigorating presenters, with the kaupapa (theme) around building resilience in nursing practice.

The presenters included: Nat Cameron - Rongoa Māori for Health; Joni Gordon - Māori Mindfulness; Pam Armstrong - The Dynamics of whanaungatanga; and Maryanne Baker- a theory of Māori palliation. The Director of Nursing from Northland District Health Board - Dee Telfer - joined us to discuss her role.

Along with lots of waiata, korero and kai, Kaimahi Mirimiri (massage therapists) were kept busy providing further spiritual and physical enhancement to the day.

Māori health concepts and views from around Te Tai Tokerau were shared and from the feedback received in the evaluations all participants went away with their kete’s (baskets) filled.
