Mother and daughter finish nursing degree together

A mother and daughter were among the latest group of nursing students to be farewelled from NorthTec, at an emotional ceremony yesterday.

Debbie and Michelle Mason, from Dargaville, were watched proudly by family members as they paid tribute to those who had supported them throughout their studies.

Mum Debbie is a former midwife who decided to return to the health profession after several years out of the workforce looking after family members. She was delighted to both finish her studies successfully and complete her exams to qualify as a Registered Nurse, and is now looking forward to getting back to work.

Daughter Michelle, 23, will soon start working in the surgical ward at Whangarei Hospital. She was told she had got the job yesterday, before the whakawatea held at NorthTec’s Te Puna o Te Mātauranga marae. Michelle said she was “very relieved” to have landed the job that she has always wanted.

Both said that while they had been a little worried initially about studying together in the same class, it had worked out well for them. They had been able to support each other throughout the three-year nursing programme, and used the drive from Dargaville to the Raumanga campus to test each other and help prepare for exams.

Michelle said: “It’s been great, we’ve been a real support to each other and we’ve been able to bounce things off each other. We’ve had multiple times where one of us has been a bit down but the other has been able to pull them back up again. It’s worked out really well being in the same class.”

Debbie and Michelle were joined by their classmates at the event, who took it in turns to praise their “awesome” tutors and thank their families, often tearfully, for their support.
