Inspiring Northland youth for a career in engineering

Career guidance for high school students doesn’t usually take the form of an evening at the movies, but that might be about to change.

The Dream Big engineering documentary, shot in IMAX and narrated by Hollywood star Jeff Bridges, has been received with critical acclaim in the USA, and was shown recently at Engineering Week events in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

It is now coming to Whangarei Events Cinema on 6 September, thanks to the Engineering Education 2 Employment (EE2E) project, based at NorthTec.

“There’s a big shortage of engineers in New Zealand, and it’s such an interesting and well-paid career, but many high school students don’t know about it. When we say ‘engineering’ they think only of automotive and fabrication, unaware of the vast range of civil, electrical and mechanical engineering careers, for example,” says Mirko Wojnowski, project lead for the EE2E project at NorthTec.

To simultaneously excite and inform students, parents and teachers, the 45-minute, inspirational documentary is followed by a Q&A session with a range of local civil and electrical engineers, who can answer questions about the opportunities and challenges in the industry, and the different pathways for becoming an engineer.

The event is also supported by IPENZ (Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand) and Future in Tech, as well as Opus, who are the sponsors of the Dream Big movie in New Zealand.

The event takes place on Wednesday, 6 September, from 6pm to 8pm, at Whangarei’s Events Cinema. Tickets are free but anyone wishing to attend must register online. To register or for more information, go to
