Six years ago, Trudi McGinn was waiting for the right job to come up after moving back to Whangarei with her family. Now, she is realising it was at her fingertips the whole time.
The well-travelled Northlander is about to have her first solo exhibition in August, at the Geoff Wilson Gallery, NorthTec, titled 'Cities Within City'.
Trudi says having her paintings filling a gallery and on show to the public – all of which started from a local painting class – is a “surreal event”.
She said: “I was waiting for a job to come up and had three months of spare time, so I decided to join a painting class a friend suggested. I joined this small group of painters, tutored by Laurence Berry, and never looked back, and didn’t go for the job.
“I could not think of a better place for my first show as a solo artist than the Geoff Wilson Gallery in my home town,” the mother of three explained. “I have a definite sense of home-coming with this exhibition and a renewed link with Northland’s deep roots.”
Layering empasto-thick oils onto canvas, Trudi feels her paintings have a pictorial noir theme to them – ‘as if a loose storyboard narrative for a film has been shot through the lens of a camera’. In her series, fictional cities seem to collide on canvas and nothing that is presented is what it seems.
“My ideas seem to constantly flick between family life and life on a global scale. I attempt to combine both with my varied experiences, memories and reflections.”
The works take time to evolve, the artist says: “It has taken me the good part of two years to get these paintings ready for exhibition. I have no expectations when I start and no outcome in mind – just a few marks that please me, often in chalk to start with which soon turns into paint and then a finished work.”
Trudi McGinn's works have been shown at Reyburn House, Whangarei, in the collaborative show ‘If We Shadows’, and she has also had work shown in Kaan Zamaan Gallery in Kerikeri.
The ‘Cities Within City’ exhibition will be open to the public from Friday, 4 August at the Geoff Wilson Gallery.
