Art auction to fund trip to China

NorthTec arts students are auctioning their works to help fund an exchange programme to Whangarei’s sister city in China.

The students have been selected from all areas of the NorthTec arts programme – Digital Arts, Visual Arts and Māori Arts (Maunga Kura Toi) – and they will travel with an arts tutor.

They will study a special programme designed for them, alongside local students in the art school at the Haikou College of Economics and Vocational Technology. The Haikou college is one of NorthTec’s international partnership schools and is based in Hainan province.

NorthTec arts tutor, Ellie Smith, said: “Our students and their tutor will be ambassadors for our art school, showcasing our unique Kiwi flavour and in doing so will also represent Tai Tokerau, Northland arts and New Zealand culture.

“This is an amazing opportunity for them, which we believe will enhance their learning and development, open their minds to new cultures and techniques, and even influence their art in different ways not yet explored.”

The students have organised an online art auction to raise funds for the trip, which takes place in October. The auction will feature local art as well as a number of works which have been gifted from the ‘In Dialogue’ exhibition, held earlier in the year at NorthTec’s Geoff Wilson Gallery and featuring the work of tutors and former students from the Haikou college.

The auction will be launched tomorrow (9 August) from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, and will run until 23 August at the Concrete Space Gallery in NorthTec’s Arts Centre. Artworks will be on show for viewing and potential buyers can bid online in a TradeMe auction via
