NorthTec has formalised its commitment to students with disabilities, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CCS Disability Action.
The signing on Monday (5 December) at the NorthTec marae was celebrated with a pōwhiri. It followed on from the International Day of People with a Disability, which took place on Saturday (3 December).
The MoU was signed by NorthTec’s Acting Chief Executive, Mark Ewen, and Auriole Ruka, General Manager, Northern Region, for CCS Disability Action. It formalises work already undertaken, acknowledges the strong partnership between the two organisations, and commits both to working together in the future to assist people with disabilities.
Mark Ewen said: “NorthTec is committed to supporting students with disabilities, and assisting our disabled students to achieve their goals both personally and in their careers. I look forward to the implementation of this MoU over the next year.”
Auriole Ruka said she that she had been both a student and a part-time employee at NorthTec, and the business degree she had gained had helped her hugely in her career. She was therefore delighted to return for the signing of the MoU, which she saw as an “important milestone” for CCS Disability Action and for people with disabilities.
Kirsten James, Head of Student Services for NorthTec, said: “As an organisation we want to see all people succeed, no matter what background they come from. So whatever we can do to make that happen, let’s go!”
The MoU commits both parties to a series of actions which will provide enhanced support to students with disabilities. These include:
Strengthening the referral process between CCS and NorthTec to ensure students have the support they need while both studying and transitioning to employment
Working together to assist disabled students via a personal plan identifying support needs
Collaboration between NorthTec, CCS and other agencies to assist students into employment
CCS providing advice about campus access and facilities, and providing input and training via staff development workshops
Jointly developing a code of practice for supporting students with impairments
CCS providing advice about potential funding sources for students to purchase adaptive technology and equipment
Collaborating to make relevant information available to disabled students
Providing a staff member at each organisation as key coordinator for people with disabilities.
