Artists Wanted for NorthTec Gallery Spaces

The new manager at NorthTec’s Geoff Wilson Gallery is calling for submissions from any artists interested in exhibiting their work.

Alysn Midgelow-Marsden, Creative Industries Education Co-ordinator at NorthTec’s Raumanga campus, is keen to see a wide variety of artists making use of the gallery space.

She said: “The Geoff Wilson Gallery is one of the few purpose-built art spaces in Northland. It supports exhibitions and creative events in a changing programme through the year. The gallery has a flexible format which can support several exhibitions at any one time; we are making the most of this and adding to our programming by using the spaces independently.

“This means that we have three new opportunities for artists; a window space, a media space and a shop area. It will provide a greater incentive for visitors to come to the gallery and spend more time here.”

Alysn said that while the main gallery programme is complete for 2016, she welcomes proposals from artists for the three further spaces: “Proposals can be for exhibitions or displays of work which are for sale, or installation/intervention-based or community art projects. We are especially interested in the stories, the inspiration and the development behind the making of the works.”

The Window Gallery consists of a large wall which is 3.7m long and 1.2m deep and is in a prime viewing position, seen by everyone walking past the gallery. If work is for sale there will be a 30 per cent commission taken from the retail price of any items sold.

The Media Gallery is a dedicated space for digital media artworks of all kinds, which can be darkened or lit independently, and has doors to separate it from the other gallery areas and a permanent projector available. The space is approximately 3.1 x 4.9m.

The Shop area at the front of the gallery is perfect for smaller works which can be exhibited for longer periods, with a review each three months. Priority is given to current and former NorthTec students and staff, but Alysn will consider work by any artists. In the Shop, the gallery takes a 50 per cent commission from the retail price.

Anyone who is interested in using these gallery spaces should email a brief description of their proposal to Artists need to include information about the type of works, the theme, names of any artists involved and a small selection of images of the type of work proposed for display.

For further information about the Geoff Wilson Gallery, email Alysn via the gallery or call her on 09-470 3805 (Wednesdays and Thursdays only).
