Mata dairy farmer, Alistair McFadzean, and his wife Dianna have offered their farm as a training venue for NorthTec agricultural programmes.
The McFadzean 103-hectare dairy farm offers unique training opportunities to those who wish to develop their general skills in fencing, milk harvesting, weed control, quad and tractor use and livestock handling.
Alistair’s 23 years of agricultural experience have been put to good use because he is now employed by NorthTec as an agricultural tutor. Mr McFadzean said it was an incredible opportunity that he did not want to pass by, and felt that it was his way of contributing to helping the next generation of farmers.
NorthTec Agriculture Programme leader, Dom Steenstra, said he was delighted with the outcome and looks forward to many years of partnership with Alistair and his family. The opportunity was identified with the help of Federated Farmers Field Officer for Northland, Malcolm Fuller.
The McFadzeans have only been on this particular dairy farm for a couple of years, and are looking at increasing herd numbers and improving the general infrastructure of the farm, which will ultimately provide more opportunity for training and students.
Mr Steenstra said there would not too many workplaces in Northland that had a bird’s eye view of the Whangarei Harbour, especially Portland and Limestone Island.
The National Certificate in Agriculture (General Skills) Level 2 will commence on 20 April. This programme involves four days per week delivery for 12 weeks, and there are no course fees. It is hoped to attract potential students from the Dargaville, Maungatapere, southern Whangarei and Waipu areas.
Free transport is available for students from specific pick-up points to get to and from the farm.
