Great Turnout for Community Day

NorthTec’s Raumanga campus buzzed with activity when more than 2000 people turned out to take part in the second annual Community Day.

Headline entertainers JGeeks finished the day with style when they performed in front of a large crowd and visitors queued up for photos with the trio afterwards.

Families made the most of the free activities on offer, including a bouncy castle, Segway riding and “bumper ball” Zorbing.

With most NorthTec programme areas represented, there were many enquiries about studying next year, and visitors took the opportunity to chat with staff and students about their tertiary education options.

The free sausage sizzle easily dispensed with 800 snarlers and NorthTec’s hospitality students were equally busy selling burgers and other food. The horticultural team handed out free seedlings and the arts department painted a giant mural, with the help of the community.

The hairdressing and beauty therapy team were kept busy with a constant flow of children having their nails painted and hair plaited, while the nursing team took blood pressure readings and gave out advice throughout the day.

Community stalls ranging from election services to childcare organisations were also in demand.

Local two-piece band A2Stix provided the musical backdrop to the day, which was again judged a success by the organisers. Ellie Ball, NorthTec’s Events and Promotions Coordinator, said: “It was fantastic to see so many people and families come on to campus to celebrate Community Day with us. The weather was beautiful and the entertainers were great - it all made for a free, fun day out for families and prospective students.”
