The International Pastoral Care Coordinator organises an orientation programme for new international students each semester including a traditional Maori welcome or ‘Pōwhiri’, campus tour, shared lunch and opportunities to meet other students. Watch a short video about orientation. Some of the topics covered during orientation include culture shock, living in NZ, attendance and attainment, support services and complaint procedures. Representatives of different community organisations, such as police, banks, driving schools etc are often invited too. Students also receive a welcome pack containing the International Student Guide, NorthTec merchandise and useful Whangārei publications.
Events aimed at introducing international students to the local sights, culture and lifestyle are held at regular intervals and include:
visiting Waitangi, the birthplace of the nation
trips to the picturesque Bay of Islands
gathering shellfish
kayaking
BBQs
To encourage interaction between the international team and our students, the International Student Council was formed. Besides bridging communication, the team has been set up to support all students with events that will unite our international community, to establish study groups that will encourage students with academic support and to hold regular meetings that are open to all students where issues, solutions and ideas are exchanged. The Student Council is your voice and will speak to the International Team on your behalf.
