At NorthTec you will be well supported by a range of dedicated services

We provide our international students with individualised support to help you as you transition to life and study at NorthTec in Whangārei. We go beyond what is required under The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021. The Code outlines the standards you can expect to keep you safe and well and have a positive experience while you study with us.

International Team

NorthTec employs a dedicated International Team to guide you through your journey from first enquiry to enrolment to graduation. We help you to:

  • Apply for or renew visas and medical & travel insurance

Orientation Programme

We hold an orientation programme for every new international including a Pōwhiri (traditional Maori welcome), a campus tour, introduction to support services and many opportunities to meet other students, tutors and key staff.

Some of the topics covered include culture shock, living in NZ, driving rules, attendance and attainment, understanding the medical system, insurance, and complaint procedures. We also visit local community organisations, the police, set up bank accounts, and have a tour of the city’s key tourist attractions. Students also receive a welcome pack containing the International Student Guide, NorthTec merchandise and useful Whangārei publications.

Events and Activities

Events aimed at introducing international students to the local sights, culture and lifestyle are held at regular intervals and include: 

  • visiting Waitangi, the birthplace of the nation

  • trips to the picturesque Bay of Islands and other beaches

  • Celebrating some of the key cultural festivals such as Spring Festival, Holi, Diwali, Mid-Autumn festival)


The Raumanga campus is set in park-like grounds with lawns and gardens surrounding the learning spaces.  Our extensive range of facilities including a Library, Health Centre, Fitness Centre/Gym, café, computer labs, common room, award-winning hospitality training restaurant, modern hair and beauty training salon and purpose-built art and exhibition gallery.

Academic Advisors

NorthTec Academic Advisors have the knowledge and expertise to guide you through issues that may impact on your study. We have a specialist academic adviser who is trained to work with students whose English is not their first language.
