In this busy and fast-changing world we live our lives with more and more technology. It seems there is an ever increasing expectation to become technologically literate. A new art exhibition at the Geoff Wilson gallery at NorthTec invites you to consider what space this leaves for the traditional – our social connections, rituals and values - within this digitally saturated landscape.
Is This Thing On? is an exhibition that showcases the diverse art practices of eight graduating Bachelor of Applied Arts students from NorthTec: Threy Cameron, Grant Matthews, Jared McGiven, Torben Morrison, Ihipera Keefe, Joe Paikea, Jolene Pascoe and Isaiah Rameka.
Together their artworks explore ideas that are drawn from a strong sense of influence, life experiences and cultural identities. Motifs explored in their work range from culture, nostalgia, and memories, to darkness, death, and space. Their artworks utilize traditional, contemporary and digital media, such as projection mapping, digital illustration, animation and manipulation, sculpture, paint, illustration, and print.
The exhibition will open officially on Wednesday the 20th of November between 4-6 pm at the Geoff Wilson Gallery at NorthTec. The exhibition can be subsequently viewed from Thursday 21 November – Friday 6th December, from 10am - 4pm.
Asked about his time at NorthTec studying on the Bachelor of Applied Arts (BAA) Degree, Isaiah Rameka said "It has been a great three years doing what I have a passion for, especially the journey with everyone, the student and tutors. I wouldn’t want to have done it with anyone other than these amazing people."
Threy Cameron also shares "I would describe my experience completing my BAA as a great learning curve. Having many people to interact and learn with was a great privilege. … I have learnt from many tutors and fellow students how to improve my work and to keep pushing to new heights. The degree will be a great stepping stone for me to reach higher education and create an enjoyable career for myself."
Haere mai and join the students at the opening of their exhibition Is This Thing On? 4-6 pm on Wednesday 20th of November at the Geoff Wilson Gallery. The Gallery can be found in the Toi Te Pito Arts Precinct, at NorthTec’s Whangārei Campus. Enter through Gate 3 off Raumanga Valley Road.
