Te Matarau Education Trust is a collective of five Hapū and lwi that have come together to support Māori and Pasifika Trades Training in Tai Tokerau, working in conjunction with NorthTec.

A joint promotion between NorthTec and Te Matarau Education Trust, the scholarships allow learners throughout Tai Tokerau aged 16-40 years to enrol in trades training programmes and study fees-free.

The scheme, part of the Government’s Māori and Pasifika Trades Training initiative, is in its fourth year of operation in Tai Tokerau. Its aim is to enable more Māori and Pasifika learners to obtain practical qualifications, trades apprenticeships and employment.

Te Matarau Education Trust provides a unique Hapū/Iwi-specific pastoral care support package to its ākonga (learners). As well as receiving fees-free study, ākonga are helped with issues that might stop them studying, and are also supported to reconnect with their whakapapa.

Learners under the Te Matarau banner study at NorthTec’s purpose-built trades and hospitality training facilities, or on real, working farms and forest land.
