This programme is for 16-17 year olds who:
- Have achieved NCEA Level 1 or less
- Want a change from school
- Want to enrol for full-time study for at least a year
- Want to learn practical skills
- Are at least 16 or have an MOE exemption
- Will not turn 18 within 3 months of starting tertiary study
- Are new to tertiary education i.e. not previously or currently enrolled in a Student Achievement Component (SAC) funded course
About MyStart
Students complete the Certificate in Vocational Studies which is structured around a core component (essential work skills) and one of the following strands:
Introduction to Business and Computing
Business, Administration and Computing skills
Introduction to Environmental Studies
Wildlife Management and Applied Environmental studies
Introduction to Forestry
Essential Forestry and Maintenance skills
Introduction to Primary Industries
Agriculture and Horticulture
Introduction to Sport and Outdoor Education
Sport and Outdoor skills
Introduction to Trades and Technology
Automotive, Construction and Mechanical Engineering
Introduction to Tourism, Hospitality and Retail
Tourism, Hospitality and Retail modules
Introduction to Visual Arts/Mäori Arts & New Media
Visual Arts, Mäori Arts and exploring New Media
Note: Other strands may be available dependant on numbers. Students have the option of acquiring NZQA Unit Standards where applicable and with the agreement of their tutors.
Locations
Delivery sites include: Whangarei, Kaikohe, Rawene, Kerikeri, Kaitaia and other regional delivery sites throughout the North.
Transport options for students are available in certain areas throughout the north.
Graduate Profile
Successful graduates will be able to demonstrate:
- Necessary life skills (budgeting, health care, team work, time
management, self awareness)
- Communication skills
- Literacy, computing and numeracy skills necessary to confidently
progress to higher level learning or vocational specific or academic
study.
Pathways and Further Study
Graduating students can pursue career pathways according to their chosen strand. Trades students, for example, would be eligible to enter the modern apprentices programme. Some may enrol in another course such as engineering, horticulture, forestry, hospitality, arts, environment, business and computing.
The Programme Aim
The Certificate in Vocational studies aims to provide students with a
combination of:
- Pastoral care and support
- Essential work skills
- A choice of strands that will assist in helping students prepare and
provide a platform to make informed decisions about their future.
Entry Requirements
- Students must not turn 18 years of age within three months of starting study
- Students must be new to tertiary education and not previously enrolled in a SAC funded course.
Selection Criteria and Processes
Interviews for potential students will be held prior to the commencement
of the programme. The interview is designed to ascertain the applicant’s
background experience, motivation and potential to perform well and
succeed in the programme.
