Programme Areas
Mike Matata – Travel & Tourism
The Travel and Tourism course is designed to get people started in the Travel and Tourism industry, Mike says it also “introduces the idea that the industry is much bigger than it appears” with his graduates able to go on and specialise in a range of different areas.
As well as covering professional development, those on the course learn the context of tourism in New Zealand, and about the important links such as who are the airlines, cruise liners, the worldwide attractions, the agencies and students are introduced to Amadeus, the global airline computer distribution booking system. Presently, Mike is only available on Fridays.

Shane Paraone - Hospitality
Hospitality tutor Shane Paraone loves seeing students light up. “They respond to what you’re doing and are really pleased with themselves when they achieve.”
“In the last 18 months, the interest from schools has simply taken off. I showcase and market our industry within schools using chocolate sculptures which attr
act the kids like bees to a honey pot.”
Shane says chef training is perfect for people with a passion for dealing with food, who are arty in how they present it, can handle the long unsociable hours, and can work under pressure.

Pat Weller - Legal Executive
Student Angela Burton (pictured) wasn’t expecting the Legal Executive course to be so relevant to life. “The course content relates directly to life and I find it fascinating. Litigation was my initial interest but I’m now enjoying estates and wills.”
However Angela warns that the course is not for the faint hearted. “It’s a tough course because of the sheer amount of content. You have to be committed or you won’t go the distance.”

Philip Alexander-Crawford - Business and Anne Patrick - Accounting
Student Olivia Sirimanne is “impressed with the amount of energy the tutors put into every session and how they broaden your horizons. They show how what we learn fits into the context of Northland, of New Zealand, and of the rest of the world. NorthTec has great resources and support that people should get in touch with and use.”
Anne is available on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Elizabeth Easterling - Beauty Therapy
Roxanne Erueti (pictured) is currently studying the Certificate in Beauty Therapy she is “surprised at how much we study, including anatomy and physiology. We need to be able to recognize skins problems and to know when to refer someone for medical help. The theory is well balanced with practical. The ten of us in our class work on each other for massage therapy and facials so we’ve become a close group.”

Dallas Halliday and Jan Dawson - Hairdressing
Student Zarnia Baker (pictured) is a young mother with two daughters. “Last year I was a bit lost with low self esteem and then I found out about this course. This is breaking me out and gives me confidence. Our class has been tight since day one. We’re a good team and Dallas is an amazing tutor. She is straight forward and clear and really supportive.”
As part of the hairdressing course, Zarnia and the other students deal with public clients. “It made me really nervous at first and I had to psyche myself up on those days. Now I look forward to client days. I especially love doing colour.”
