The Council is the governing body of NorthTec and is constituted as follows.
The NorthTec Council is the governance body for the polytechnic. The Council provides oversight for the financial management and operational performance of NorthTec ensuring that NorthTec achieves its objectives, maintains the quality of the its programme delivery and meets the obligations imposed upon it by central government through the Tertiary Education Commission. The NorthTec Council currently consists of four ministerial appointees and two independent appointees.
Vern Dark (Chair)
Mr Dark has been on the NorthTec Council since April 2005 and holds the role of Council Chair. Mr Dark has a wealth of experience leading businesses and was Managing Director of Fletcher Challenge Petrochemicals, Chief Executive of the Northland Dairy Co-operative and Chief Executive of the Northland Port Corporation.
Erima Henare (Deputy Chair)
Mr Henare (Ngati Hine, Ngāpuhi) was appointed to the Council in 2010 and has previously provided specialist advice on Mäori issues to NorthTec. Mr Henare is the principal of Koti Whero Ltd and is currently a member of the Waitangi National Trust Board, Chairman of the Māori Language Commission, a member of The Arts Council, Creative New Zealand and a member of the Northland District Health Board. Mr Henare has previously provided specialist advice on Māori issues to NorthTec and has a good understanding of the sector.
Susan Cullen
Professor Cullen (Ngati Maniapoto) was appointed to the Council in 2010. Ms Cullen has worked for 20 years in tertiary training and education both in New Zealand and internationally. Ms Cullen and her husband operate a dairy farming enterprise in Southland and reside in the Waikato. Ms Cullen has a broad spectrum of interests in educational leadership, community development, employment and trade skills.
Clare Davies-Colley
Mrs Davies-Colley has been reappointed to the Council. She commenced her term with the NorthTec Council in 2009. She is a Chartered Accountant with a background in auditing, financial accounting and business management. She is currently a director of a number of private companies.
John Mote
Mr Mote has extensive experience in both the secondary and tertiary education sectors having served as Assistant Principal at Hagley Community College and Principal of Greymouth High School.
Mr Mote is also a Ministerial appointee on the Tai Poutini and Christchurch Polytechnic Councils and has held a number of other tertiary positions including that of founding Managing Director of The National College of Design and Technology and Acting Chief Operating Officer of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.
Warren Moyes
Mr Moyes has been reappointed to the Council after commencing his term in 2009. He is the Chairman of Northpower Ltd, Northpower Australia Ltd and is a shareholder in West Coast Energy Ltd. He has held a number of appointments in the teaching, tourism, agriculture, boating and automotive industries.
