Join this established and growing industry. It's about hands-on training for life.

Horticulture and Landscape

There is a new generation of gardeners springing up all over Northland thanks to NorthTec’s Horticulture, Landscape, and Sustainable Rural Development courses.

Horticulture

Enjoy an engaging, hands-on experience of propagating, growing and maintaining a wide range of native and exotic plants and vegetables. This program is designed to meet the needs of the community and the focus can be adjusted based on the location. Horticulture courses run in over 20 locations throughout Northland from Cape Reinga to Silverdale.

Our courses are structured so that you can come in at an entry-level (Level 2) course and take bite-sized chunks all the way to a diploma, or you could branch out into a National Certificate in Horticulture (Level 4) leading to jobs in the a wide cross section of the horticulture industry including fruit production, organics, permaculture, nursery work, viticulture and landscape design. Visit Horticulture Levels 2-4 for more information and to view photos from the courses.

Sustainable Rural Development
NorthTec has the largest and fastest-growing tertiary horticulture department in New Zealand. But don’t worry that you’ll just be a number sitting in a classroom - our Sustainable Rural Development courses aren’t structured like that. Our approach is all about teaching you the skills you want to learn, where and when you want to learn them.

If you have a group of eight or more people who are keen to learn about growing food on their own patch, our tutors will come to you and teach you the specific skills you need – tailoring a course to suit the community from our range of unit standards. Visit Sustainable Rural Development for more information.

Landscape
From sustainable land use to plant selection and design, as a landscape student you will learn high-demand skills that can lead to a quality career. If you’re interested in the quality of our landscape and environment, the landscaping course may be right for you. Visit Landscape for more information.

If you’re keen to learn, our tutors are passionate about making it happen for you as an individual, a whanau or a community.
