Overview
To prepare graduates who meet the requirements for entry onto the Nursing Council of New Zealand Register of Nurses.


Content
Graduates of this programme will be able to:

  • Assess health needs
  • Advise and support people to manage their health
  • Practise nursing both independently and in collaboration with other health professionals
  • Perform general nursing functions and delegate to and direct Enrolled Nurses
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate an integrated plan of health care, in a range of settings and in partnership with individuals, families, whanau and communities
  • Demonstrate attributes of a reflective practitioner
  • Understand the importance of self-care and on-going professional development.

Papers offered in Year 1 include:

   - Human Biological Science,

   - Nursing Practice,

   - Nursing Knowledge 1,

   - Applied Social Science,

   - Human Biological Science 2,

   - Nursing Knowledge 2,

   - The Older Adult, Primary Health Care.

Admission Information
February 2012 Applicants: Applications for the February 2012 intake closed 14 October, with interviews held early November.


July 2012 Applicants: Applications close 7 May.


For applicants under 20 years old:

Total of 42 NCEA credits at Level 3 as follows:

  • 14 credits in an English language rich subject, e.g. English, history, art history, classics, geography, economics
  • Preferably 14 credits in biology, physical education or chemistry
  • An additional 14 credits across any subjects, subject areas or domains, including unit standards
    And
  • 14 credits at level 1 in mathematics, or equivalent
  • 14 credits at level 2 in science or equivalent

Applicants 20 years or older with no formal academic qualifications must provide evidence of suitability based on interview and/or portfolio.


For those intending to progress to Nursing Council of New Zealand registration, NCNZ regulations will apply and students must pass the NCNZ registration examination.
