MyStart - your opportunity

MyStart is a programme for 16-17 year olds who:

  • Have achieved NCEA Level 1 or less

  • Want a change from school

  • Want to enrol for full-time study for at least a year

  • Want to learn practical skills

  • Are at least 16 or have an MOE exemption

  • Are new to tertiary education i.e. not previously or currently enrolled in a Student Achievement Component (SAC) funded course

We provide you with a combination of pastoral care and support and essential work skills so you can build a platform to make informed decisions about your future.

Ready for work

With MyStart, you’ll learn skills for budgeting, personal health and wellbeing, team work, time management, and self awareness. We’ll help you to communicate better. You will also gain literacy, computing and numeracy skills to confidently progress to higher level learning or work training.

Streams of choice

As well as learning the core skills, you get to choose a career stream to explore further. This can be anything from forestry, to sports and outdoor recreation, to trades, to hospitality…..in fact nearly every study area that NorthTec offers. View list of options

LOCATIONS

Delivery sites include: Whangarei, KaikoheKaitaia, Dargaville, Taupo Bay and other regional delivery sites throughout the North.

Transport options for students are available in certain areas throughout the north.

Pathways up and out

Graduates from MyStart programmes can go on to further training in their chosen stream. If you chose trades for example, you would be eligible to enter the modern apprentices programme. Some of our graduates enrol in another course such as engineering, horticulture, forestry, hospitality, arts, environment, business and computing.
