Why Health and Safety Training?

It’s important. Accidents happen and competent employees, employers and contractors need the skills to prevent and deal with them. SafeTrades North’s training empowers people with the skills and know how to make workplaces safer, not just the theory behind it. Gain the skills to comply at work and up skill to keep up with industry requirements. Enhance your employment opportunities. Health and safety compliance is the law. Certification is a pre-requisite for many tradespeople and contractors working on industrial and construction sites.

You will learn:

About working safely in a variety of areas. Understand the legal obligations of employers and employees. Know what to do in emergencies. Get an insight into the drug and alcohol problems that are invading worksites and learn how to keep yourself and your workmates safer.

Courses include:

  • Forklift driving

  • Working at height or in confined spaces

  • Handling chemicals

  • Understanding potential hazards

  • Applying safety practices in the workplace.

Changes to Applied Work Practice

From 2011 the Northland Polytechnic Certificate in Applied Work Practice will be superseded with the National Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety (Workplace Safety) Level 3 programme.

How this affects current students

If you have previously enrolled in the "Certificate in Applied Work Practice" and not completed the qualification, please contact the SafeTrades North admin staff about  transition to the National Certificate in OSH (Workplace Safety) Level 3. Training will be carried out from the SafeTrades North Training centre at the NorthTec Future Trades site, 19 Dyer Street, Raumanga, Whangarei 0110.

  • The Training Centre facilities enable SafeTrades North to offer OSH induction and skills based training for Northland industries in a worksite environment.

  • In addition to its own staff, NorthTec contracts specialist industry trainers to ensure all training is of the highest industry standard.

  • To discuss training plans for your staff, please contact SafeTrades North administrators directly.
