With abundant natural resources at our fingertips, Northland is the perfect place to study environmental management.

Rich local eco-systems

We take full advantage of the area’s marine, terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. What you learn in the classroom will be put into practice working out alongside industry professionals, iwi and community groups.

We encourage students to support some of the vital and diverse environmental and pest control projects happening in this region.

Inspirational integrated learning

NorthTec’s environmental management tutors are experts in their fields and their enthusiasm for the local environment is inspiring. Our programmes incorporate pathways to help you progress from certificate to degree level and your qualifications will lead to employment or further study.

Career options

If your dream is to work as an environmental ranger, a biodiversity officer, a pest control officer, an ecologist, an eco-tourism operator, then investing in environmental studies is a good choice.

CONSERVATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

These courses begin by introducing students to the ecological and resource management principles of environmental issues. Monitoring and managing the human impacts on the environment are the next step. And we now offer Northland students access to a degree qualification in conservation management.

HUNTING AND PEST CONTROL

Northtec is the only place in New Zealand offering this course.

Students learn how to conduct and manage hunting and pest control contracts, to maximize capture rates, and to safeguard New Zealand’s biodiversity from pests.

Graduates go on to work as private pest controllers, sanctuary managers, and island pest control officers with organisations like Department of Conservation and Target Pest Solutions.

MARINE ADVENTURE AND ECO-TOURISM

If you value our natural resources, come and find out how to preserve them. Learn about our own unique environment from within that environment and equip yourself for a career in outdoor recreation and maritime tourism.

Students gain marine safety and survival skills, study the marine environment, learn about New Zealand’s eco-tourism trade and about how sustainable practices can be integrated with tourism.

This Kerikeri based course is perfect for students who want to learn what Northland’s marine environment has to offer.

Storme Cook - Marine Adventure and Eco Tourism

“Since I was 4 years old, I’ve had an immense passion for the marine environment and always told people I wanted to be a marine biologist or a marine photographer. I grew up in the Hokianga and everyone in my class knew I’d get there.”
