Tutor, Travel and Tourism
Although the course is designed to get people started in the Travel and Tourism industry, Mike says it also introduces the idea that the industry is much bigger than it appears with his graduates able to go on and specialise in a range of different areas.
Many of these are aligned with today’s business like in advertising, sales and marketing, brochure production and design, managing airline departments and/or as business development managers. The possibilities are wide and varied. Mike had worked in sales and marketing for both airline and cruise line companies before becoming a tutor at NorthTec six years ago.
The main focus of the course for him is on professional development as he says many of those going into the industry lack the essential presentation, verbal and customer skills that are needed to improve how the industry starts to be viewed. As well as covering professional development, those on the course learn the context of tourism in New Zealand, and about the important links such as who are the airlines, cruise liners, the worldwide attractions, the agencies and students are introduced to Amadeus, the global airline computer distribution booking system.
