About Modern Apprenticeships
Modern Apprenticeships is a training pathway for young people that brings a fresh approach to the best of the apprenticeship tradition. The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) administers Modern Apprenticeships nationwide through contracted coordinators.
This scheme isn't just about putting young people into jobs. Modern Apprenticeships is designed to provide fully supported quality workplace learning that will form the foundation of a new career in industry or business.
If you're aged between 16 and 22, then Modern Apprenticeship might be right for you.
Becoming an Apprentice
Successful Modern Apprentices have a bright future with career opportunities in New Zealand and overseas.
Modern Apprentices achieve nationally recognised industry standards and qualifications at levels 2, 3 and 4 of the National Qualifications Framework, and upon completion of their apprenticeship receive a National Certificate.
As a Modern Apprentice, you will need to gain an apprenticeship and begin work fulltime in your chosen field. You will also attend a weekly evening class and/or block courses during your apprenticeship period. From the start you will receive full support and mentoring from your Modern Apprenticeships Coordinator, who will encourage you every step of the way and monitor your progress as well as your employer's support and input.
Information for Employers
The Modern Apprenticeships Coordinators will help you with issues relating to the programme and your Apprentice, as well as handle the administrative work.
Your Modern Apprenticeships Coordinators know your industry or business and will work with your Industry Training Organisation to register the training agreement and facilitate training arrangements. With this level of support, taking on and training a young person has never been easier.
This is a two way street: the Modern Apprentice gains solid practical training and a nationally recognised qualification while you - the employer - get a committed Modern Apprentice who will be a valuable asset to your business.
About Masterlink
Masterlink (Master Plumbers Training Trust) is a group training scheme owned and managed by Master Plumbers. Masterlink trainees are also considered Modern Apprentices, and undertake National Certificate training that includes workplace training with host employers within the industry.
Simone Rakena, NorthTec's Modern Apprenticeships Programme Leader, acts as the Employer-in-Loco for the Training Trust in Wellington. Simone sources, interviews and employs apprentices on behalf of the Trust, which means that businesses can host an apprentice - paying only for the hours they use that apprentice. As the Modern Apprenticeship Programme Leader, Simone also coordinates the apprenticeships, including mentoring the students while on the programme.
