Mentor Programme

Do you need a hand getting around campus? Want to take on a leadership role among your peers?

Mentor Programme

Mentor Programme

NorthTec’s Mentor Kai Awhina programme provides support for newcomers to campus and the opportunity for experienced students to give back to the student community.

For students who know the campus well, the Mentor Kai Awhina programme is a great opportunity to fulfil the role of student leader, learning skills to support other students and contributing to the campus’s community atmosphere.

For students new to NorthTec, mentors are a great source of support, helping you with anything from locating classrooms to providing a friendly face and someone to talk to.

If you need a hand on campus, just look out for a mentor (in their specially labelled jackets), and if you think being a mentor sounds like you, then contact the Student Services team!

About the Mentor Programme

We are aware that each student faces new challenges as they adjust to study in a new environment at tertiary level. In fact, it starts the first day with learning what's where and who's who.

We aim to make the transition from school, work or home to NorthTec as smooth as possible. Student Mentors are available in many programmes to meet you and share their first hand experience.

Mentors are returning students who have 'been there' and have volunteered to help new students. They receive specialised training so they can help you find your way around and be a 'sounding board' if you feel like a chat.

You will have an opportunity to link up with a Mentor during orientation. Alternatively, if you would like a mentor to contact you, please send your details to studentsuccess@northtec.ac.nz
